JENNY'S EVENING WITH MASTER MICHAEL

A few nights after the party, Liz was exhausted. She absolutely loved being back in college, but found out to her embarrassment that she had signed up for a psychology class with an accelerated schedule instead of the usual one. It meant finishing the entire class in half the time. She had been so excited to register that she had hardly noticed the small detail of the class dates. Once she realized it, she was determined to power through without telling anyone. The two hours she had been given for studying were not nearly enough each day, so without letting on that something was wrong she asked for and received permission to take a laptop into her bedroom and study there, and many times Jenny would wake up after midnight to see her still furiously typing. The next day she could hardly wake up.

Finally Jenny asked her why she had to work so hard every night and Liz sighed and confessed her mistake. “But you can't tell anyone, please! I’ll get through it. I can't ask Master Ryan for any more time during the day.”

“Why not? He'll give it to you, I’m sure.”

“Please, just don't say anything; I should have looked closer and it's my fault and I already don't work as much as everyone else does...” She looked at Jenny pleadingly.

Jenny nodded reluctantly. Unfortunately, it all came out the next night when Liz had been asked to keep a guest company that evening. Instead she fell asleep after dinner and didn't show up. Master Ryan found her in a heavy sleep, and after making sure she wasn't sick, and directing Jenny to go in her place, he pulled up a chair.

“Liz, what's going on?” She tried to protest that everything was all right, but it was obvious how tired she was.

“What time did you go to sleep last night?” He looked at her piercingly.

“About three am,” she said quietly.

“And the night before?”

“About the same.”

“Have you gotten more than four hours any night this week?”

She thought a moment, then shook her head.

“Why?”

She sighed and handed him the course description and explained her mistake.

“Why didn't you come to me to ask for more time?”

“Because... because I was embarrassed, and I already work less than the others...”

“So instead you have worked so hard you can't function.”

“I'm so sorry Sir about falling asleep and not being in Mr. Arends' room when I was supposed to —”

He cut her off. “I don't care about Mr. Arends. He'll be fine. I care about you being able to get through the day without collapsing. Didn't it occur to you that since the course was accelerated, you'd be through faster, so even if you needed more time now you'd be making it up once you were done?”

Her mouth dropped open. No, it hadn't occurred to her. “I'm sorry, Sir.”

“I need you to speak up for yourself when there's something you need for your health or well-being.”

“Yes, Sir.” She looked completely morose.

He sighed. “Liz,
